The film is so scary that it twice issues a major health warning on one viewer’s Apple Watch

How can you tell how scary a movie is? Well, last month an image was released that is so horrifying that it triggered one viewer’s Apple Watch twice while he was watching the movie. Both times the watch alerted Joseph Monstern that his heart rate was high. Monstern whose Twitter username is Joseph, sent a tweet (via the service Independent) shows his Apple Watch alerting him that his heart rate was over 120 beats per minute. The second picture shows the inside of the theater where Monstern watched the movie, which is called Outwaters.
Produced and written by Robbie Banfitch, the film “follows four travelers on a harrowing journey through horror while camping in the remote Mojave Desert.” Okay, that might not sound too scary. But the film’s synopsis adds: “Mysterious voices haunt them, and when a menacing force descends, their terrifying journey into soul-crushing darkness begins.”

In his tweet, Joseph shouts out Banfitch, writing: “I’d say tonight was pretty damn eventful! @RobbieBanfitch you’re amazing, hilarious and this re-watch of @TheOutwaters has confirmed my opinion that I believe this is one of the most horrifying and traumatizing episodes I’ve ever experienced in a found footage horror film .”

Discussing the two high heart rate alerts on the Apple Watch, Monstern stated, “I got two of them throughout the movie.” He also described Outwaters “not even a simple descent into madness, but a full-on assault on the senses…just like an ax to the head.” Another person who saw the film, Brandy Sims, wrote: “It was confusing, disturbing, extremely distressing and an absolute trip to hell.” Another person said she had to “leave the theater to puke.”

If you’re going to see this movie in the theater, make sure your Apple Watch is fully charged so you’ll be alerted if your heart rate starts to rise while watching this horror story. Outwaters is part of the horror genre known as found footage. All or most of the movie is played as if it came from found footage or found footage.
