HustleGPT is a hilariously scary AI experiment in capitalism

For $100 and a simple prompt, GPT-4 is on a mission to automate hustle culture.

Shortly after OpenAI released GPT-4, a more advanced version of its generative AI model, brand designer and writer Jackson Greathouse Fall(Opens in a new tab) came up with a plan and fed it into GPT-4:

“You are HustleGPT, an entrepreneurial AI. I am your human counterpart. I can act as a link between you and the physical world. You have $100, and your only goal is to turn it into as much money as possible in the shortest possible time . possible, without doing anything illegal. I’ll do whatever you say and keep you up to date with our current cash total. No manpower.”

“Do you think he will be able to make smart investments and build an online business?” Hall tweeted. “Carry on”. Since his original tweet, which has 89,000 likes and counting, Hall’s project has the internet on the edge of its seat, watching to see if HustleGPT can make money.

GPT-4 responses are mostly better than GPT-3 (but not always)

The internet is full of examples of what GPT-4’s advanced intelligence can achieve. It can write usable lawsuits, build websites from text messages, automate online dating, and generally scare people with all the jobs it can replace. Hall has gone a step further by harnessing his abilities to an age-old ambition that is the backbone of capitalist society: to make money with as little effort as possible. At a time when people are wondering whether AI will work for us or against us, this experiment shows in real time what get-rich-quick schemes will look like in the future.

Mashable reached out to Hall for comment, but as of this writing, he had not responded to our questions.

The business plan proposed by GPT-4 was to create an affiliate marketing site for content about green products. He found a cheap domain name called greengadgetguru.com(Opens in a new tab) which Hall quickly bought for $8.16. Hall then asked him to generate requests for DALL-E-2 to make a logo.

Hall then asked him to design a complete layout of the site in detail. With the help of Midjourney, GPT-4 wrote an article listing ten eco-friendly kitchen gadgets, finding real sustainable products. Hall paid another $29 to host, and with that, the website was live.

Hall had $62.84 left over, so he asked GPT-4 what to do with it. Like any good scammer, GPT-4 knew his product needed exposure, so he suggested allocating $40 for Facebook and Instagram ads. All that Twitter hype had investors drooling to get in at first next great affiliate marketing site GPT-4 viral experiment. At the end of the first day, Green Gadget Guru had $100 of investment from an undisclosed party.

The next day, HustleGPT woke up refreshed and ready to tackle the world of online business. Here’s where things started to take off: GPT-4 allocated a budget to hire freelance content creators who would themselves generate content through ChatGPT and announced plans to develop a SaaS (software as a service) product.

On the third day, GPT-4 advised Hall on how to capitalize on his new 50,000 new Twitter followers, inspiring the launch of a GitHub repository(Opens in a new tab) for others to try the HustleGPT challenge and get more investments. On the fourth day, GPT-4 began recruiting new workers to manage the Green Guru gadgets.

And then GPT-4 saw that his work was done, so he rested. It’s a joke! HustleGPT doesn’t get tired, because it’s a machine.

After four days, Green Gadget Guru has an investment of $7,812.84, a growing team and content in the works. But he hasn’t earned any income yet. Will Hall and HustleGPT’s project fall prey to the common startup mistake of all the hype but no profit? Or will Hall make money from a generic site that is openly just an experiment to make money?

Of course, the viral success of HustleGPT is because people want to see what the AI is capable of. But it’s ticking all the boxes when it comes to building a business. If it succeeds, it will be because of the virality of GPT-4, but that still counts as it would achieve the initial goal of making as much money as possible in the shortest possible time. GPT-4 is using every tool at its disposal, which includes leveraging its fame. And that’s what the push is all about.
