Top247 in-state WR, West Virginia commit Rodney Gallagher visiting Penn State

Penn State is hosting one of the top 2023 recruits in Pennsylvania for a visit this weekend.

Top247 Uniontown Laurel Highlands wide receiver and West Virginia commit Rodney Gallagher will be on campus when the Nittany Lions play Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.

Gallagher has been committed to West Virginia since May 25. He picked the Mountaineers over offers from Penn State, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Iowa State, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, NC State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Texas, Virginia Tech, William & Mary and Wisconsin.

“For me and my position, it’s really the best fit,” Gallagher told 247Sports after committing to West Virginia. “You have guys graduating, so I think I have a chance to play right away there. Just the fit there, and the campus right there, 20 minutes away from me, my family can be there for me whenever I need them mentally, and just the relationships I have with coach Neal (Brown) and the whole staff have been great, and I am getting closer and closer with them.”

Gallagher’s trip to Penn State comes on the heels of the Nittany Lions experiencing some overturn at wide receiver in their 2023 recruiting class. Four-star Atco (NJ) Winslow Township wideout Ejani Shakir backed off his commitment to Penn State on Sunday night. Shakir had been committed to the Nittany Lions since May.

“First, I would like to thank Penn State, coach [James] Franklin, coach [Taylor Stubblefield] and staff for taking their time to recruit and host me and my family to an amazing University,” Shakir tweeted. “I want to thank the Penn State fans for all the love and support throughout my recruitment process. With that being said, I will be decommitting from Penn State University.”

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Gallagher is the No. 219 recruits in the class of 2023, the No. 28 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 3 prospects in Pennsylvania.
