Syracuse football vs. Minnesota prediction in the Pinstripe Bowl

Minnesota may have won four of its last five, but it is also 4-4 in its previous eight following a 4-0 start. The Golden Gophers compiled an unspectacular 5-4 record in the Big Ten even though they did not have to face Michigan or Ohio State.

Head coach PJ Fleck’s squad features a run-heavy offense led by running back Mohamed Ibrahim. That kind of style generally keeps the clock moving and minimizes possessions for both teams on the field. Not too surprisingly, the Gophers have won by more than seven points only twice in their last eight games.

Syracuse has faced three top-25 opponents this season – opponents better than Minnesota – and has one outright win (24-9 over NC State) and a six-point loss (27-21 to Clemson). Quarterback Garrett Shrader has passed for 609 yards over the past two contests, and receiver Oronde Gadsen II has 891 yards and six touchdowns for the year.

Syracuse has been outstanding in bowl games over the past 30 years or so, including in the Pinstripe Bowl and including against Minnesota. It defeated the Golden Gophers 21-17 in the 2013 Texas Bowl, which came on the heels of two consecutive Pinstripe Bowl victories. Obviously, those results don’t mean a whole lot now, but it is worth noting that head coach Dino Babers has won his only previous bowl-game appearance with the Orange (they destroyed West Virginia to conclude the 2018 season).

With more than three weeks to prepare for Minnesota, Babers should be able to come up with a game plan that helps his team either win outright or at the very least, cover a +7.5 spread available at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Syracuse football vs. Minnesota Pinstripe Bowl opening lines and odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook

Minnesota is a -7.5 underdog in the Pinstripe Bowl, making Syracuse a +7.5 underdog. Both sides are priced at -110 at DraftKings Sportsbook. That means an $11 bet on the Golden Gophers returns $10 in profit if they win by at least eight points. An $11 wager on the Orange gets you $10 of winnings if they either win outright or lose by no more than seven points.

The game total, or over/under, is set at 42, and both sides come with -110 odds. An $11 bet on the over nets a profit of $10 if the two teams combine for at least 43 points, while an $11 wager yields $10 in winnings if no more than 41 points are scored. If the game ends with exactly 42 points, all bets are pushed, and the stakes are returned.

Syracuse football bowl history

Syracuse is 16-9-1 all-time in bowl games, with its lone tie coming via a 16-16 decision against Auburn in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 1987 season. The Orange lost their first three bowl games (1952, 1956, 1958) and won only three of their first 10, but since then, they are 13-3. They have won four in a row dating back to the 2010 season and most recently prevailed in the 2018 Camping World Bowl, beating West Virginia 34-18.

The Pinstripe Bowl came into existence in 2010, and Syracuse has already made two appearances. It defeated Kansas State 36-34 in 2010 and crushed West Virginia 38-14 in 2012.
