5-star WR Jalen Brown commits to LSU over Michigan, others

Michigan’s football program missed on another five-star target in the 2023 class on Friday.

Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep five-star receiver announced his commitment to LSU in a live video on Instagram, choosing the Tigers over other finalists Michigan, Miami, Florida State and Texas A&M. His announcement came just hours after Detroit Martin Luther King five-star quarterback Dante Moore verbally pledged to Oregon over the Wolverines and others.

Brown, the No. 29 prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, took an official visit to Michigan last month, but it wasn’t enough to move the needle. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder also took an official to LSU a week earlier and now becomes the Tigers’ top-ranked recruit this cycle.

Michigan currently has two receivers committed in the 2023 class with three-stars Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, but Brown would have instantly become the headliner.

“A true deep threat that uses elite foot speed to take the top off a defense,” 247Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins wrote in his scouting report. “Has not only improved track times over the years, but has also evolved as a football player. At his best when he’s asked to just get deep as he has almost mastered the fly/go route. Also has beaten his fair share of cornerbacks and safeties on post/corner routes. Tracks the ball to a high degree once it’s in the air and can make a grab over his shoulder. Has also gotten better and better at taking on defenders and making contested catches. Might stretch the field better than most, but must get better at working the short to intermediate numbers on the route tree and needs to learn how to extend plays after the catch, especially after contact. ”

It wasn’t all negative news for the Wolverines on the recruiting trail Friday, however. They did pick up a commitment from Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic four-star edge defender Collins Acheampong, who is ranked as the No. 298 overall recruit. He becomes Michigan’s 10th verbal pledge this cycle and fourth rated as a four-star prospect.
