1/plinth study embraces the beauty of industrial design
Seoul-based designer Woojin Park of 1/plinth study unveils its latest industrial-inspired furniture collection PU-TB with the modular PU-TB Chair. The series continues the design studio’s exploration of adding artistic value to industrial products to highlight their underlying beauty by creating a multi-functional frame comprised of thermoplastic polyurethane and steel. From its simplified construction, the chair can be expanded for use in various ways, usable as either furniture or hardware. The project is defined by a tensile and durable system that derives from the force between the TPU tube and the bolt when they are connected together.

As one half of design duo behind 1/plinth Studio, industrial designer Woojin Park launches the PU-TB chair series, which makes use of the properties of the existing TPU material, such as its high elasticity, flexibility, durability and tensile strength. Within the frame, the material is held firmly together by a system of bolts fastened through the inner diameter of the tube. This system expresses parts that receive strength from people or objects in various forms of lines and planes. The chair allows users to experience its flexibility and stability in different ways. ‘You can fully feel the structure of PU-TB by sitting or leaning on it like a chair or lifting it up like a handle,‘ notes the designer.
