28-year-old rapper Kosta Tich died after collapsing at a Johannesburg music festival on Saturday.
The cause of death was not immediately released.
“Death has tragically knocked on our door. Stealing us from our beloved son, brother and grandson. Konstantinos Tsobanoglou (28), whom South Africa loves and idolizes under the stage name “Costa Titch”, the family wrote on the rapper’s Instagram page.
According to Cape Town Etc, Costa Titch collapsed on stage while performing at the Nasrec Expo Centre.
A person rushed to help the rapper, who briefly got to his feet before falling again.
“It is with deep pain that we have to acknowledge his death at this moment. We thank the emergency responders and all those involved in his final hours on this earth,” the family continued.
The Tsobanoglou family thanks you for the love and support you have shown our son and continue to lift him up spiritually. Please keep us in your prayers and upliftment in the Lord,” the family closed.
The South African organizers of Ultra Music Festival also tweeted shortly after Costa Titch’s death was announced: “We are devastated by the sudden loss of beloved South African artist Costa Titch who tragically passed away this weekend. Costa was a brilliant voice in South Africa’s piano scene – a talented rapper, dancer, songwriter, colleague and friend of the festival.”
Born in Nelspruit, South Africa, the rapper began his career as a backup dancer before turning to rap music.
Costa Titch was famous for mixing traditional South African culture with trap beats.
The rapper’s most popular song in 2021 was the viral single “Big Flexa” on TikTok.
Later, a remix version of the song was released with the participation of musician Akon.
